π₯ On April 23, 2015, Calbuco in Chile erupted unexpectedly. This large plume of smoke darkened the sky, while volcanic lightning lit the sky. Volcanic lightning is caused by colliding, fragmenting particles of volcanic ash (and sometimes ice), which generate static electricity within the plume.
